Scope Global

  • Scope Global, organisers of the inaugural Returned Australian Volunteer Network (RAVN) conference, contacted Data Knowhow’s Lisa Cornish to assist with media coverage of their conference utilising her work with Devex.

The Australian Volunteers for International Development program has a small but long-standing role in the Australian aid program, allowing Australians to share their expertise as volunteers in developing countries.

The inaugural conference for returned volunteers provided an important opportunity for former volunteers to discuss their work and share knowledge and ideas for the future of the program and the role of volunteers in development.

And media coverage allowed for improved visibility of the program and its impacts.

Utilising the Devex network not only allowed for knowledge of the program to reach the development sector, but the development sector globally. But the needs of the conference manager, government stakeholders and Devex all needed to be met to produce a media strategy suiting the needs of all parties.

  • Data Knowhow’s Lisa Cornish brought a range of expertise through her experience as a journalist in marketing, communications and engagement strategies.

Through her years of experience in news, she understood how to develop content appropriate to the audience, grabbing their attention to help share the message or information being communicated.

For this project, Lisa liaised with the conference organizers, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (the government stakeholder in the conference) and Devex to understand the needs and requirements of all parties to deliver a media strategy to suit all parties.

Developing news stories in advance, Lisa was able to develop content to make readers aware of the upcoming conference and coverage by Devex.

During the event, Lisa provided social media support through her personal Twitter account as well as through the Devex handle altering followers to the conference.

And following the conference, Lisa published a number of stories highlighting key discussions to share news of the conference further, including her interview with the Minister for International Development and the Pacific.

She has similarly provided similar media support in covering DFAT's Trade Facilitation Reform conference in December (https://www.devex.com/news/7-good-news-takeaways-on-future-of-aid-for-trade-89340), as the sole media presence, as well as for the Asia-Pacific Humanitarian Leadership Conference (https://www.devex.com/news/5-takeaways-from-the-asia-pacific-humanitarian-leadership-conference-90148).

    • Increased media coverage for the inaugural returned volunteer conference

    • Increased international awareness of Australia's volunteer program

    • Increased presence for Devex in Australia
