Devex

  • Devex is an international news and information organisation aimed at the development sector. In September 2014, Data Knowhow’s Lisa Cornish was contacted to enhance capability and coverage of Australia's development sector.

Lisa has developed clear content outlining Australia's policies and programs focusing on aid, development and humanitarian assistance including written stories, videos and photographs and has used her skills as a data journalist to a value add to clients through engaging data stories and interactives.

  • Lisa has enabled new means of providing content through her skillset and experience in data journalism. Development data is large and complex with large gaps, and by analysing data and producing interactive visualisations, Lisa provides new insights into development issues. Data visualisations enable content that is user driven, allowing them to gain insights into issues and areas important to them.

Visualisations were developed with the needs of the user and intended use in mind and include map, chart, table and textual representation of information.

Ease of navigation, web integration and general usability are all considered in developing content and its ease of including and tagging in publication systems. Lisa upgraded the standards of visualisations to provide a consistent and clear messaging. This was in addition to her reporting on Australian aid as a correspondent.

  • Lisa’s work with Devex has produced more than 550 stories improving international recognition of Australia's development sector. Her role with Devex has led to improved content, including increased use of data visualisations and specialised content for a business intelligence audience. The profile of this position saw Lisa invited as a speaker to the 2018 UN World Data Forum in Dubai, and she has been a speaker and moderator at a range of other events.

Lisa’s interactive analysing COVID-19 funding announcements was featured by Tableau, quoted by US media, received almost 200,000 views and has become an important resource for a range of researchers studying the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
